Client rating??

Is there a way to rate clients so I can create a priority list without them seeing any such flags? But, so it’s really easy to see, like, as soon as we bring up their file it would be like a red/yellow/green or something like that?

I’m trying to figure out a way to have my assistant prioritize my vip clients and easily see which black listed clients are, well, black listed. With limited amount of time I’m trying to free up a couple days of the week for emergencies and my regulars who I adore but seem to never have time for anymore because of such a tight schedule. Since my assistant doesn’t know one from the other, I’m trying to figure out a way to easily label .

Here's the early recording and Q&A.

@tchurch that's a great question! Luke & John will touch on that in our end-of-year webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 16!

"I go to CompanyCam, I type in the city, and all of a sudden, I’ve got 50 pictures of us doing work"

Really awesome interview by the amazing @janel.delgado!

She sat down with Blake Knoblock, who handles marketing and software management at FBH Architectural Security, a family-run door and hardware distributor in Flint, Michigan, to learn how his team uses CompanyCam to document installations, prove deliveries, and train new salespeople in an industry where precision matters.

Check it out: How a 75-Year-Old Door & Door Hardware Company Uses Photo Documentation to Prove Quality Work

Good tools to create renderings

Has anyone found a good tool to create a decent rendering from a photo. For example: I have a picture of an existing back porch where I'm changing the posts from wood to brick, painting the brick to match the house, adding a 30" brick wall, then screening the space. I can get close with ChatGPT, and a couple other ai tools, but I have not found one I'm satisfied with. Any ideas from the group?

Your WILDEST story is ...

What is the craziest story that has happened to you on a job site, since running a business, dealing with a customer or just being in the contracting/construction space?

We're going to keep this thread open and moving forward and we may rank the best ones on an episode of the Good Contractor Podcast or possibly have a few folks on to tell the story on an episode.

Fire away!

Paid Time Off

As most of my questions, I’m always interested to hear on how others operate their companies. I started mine front eh ground up with zero business experience almost 11 years ago. So I’m always trying to learn new things and adapt to better or more efficient ways.

So here’s my next question. Paid time off. What do you do? Or are you strictly vacation pay? I am in Canada so things may be a bit different here. Pretty standard for the trades is a base 4% with stat holidays paid. Other companies will do 12% with no paid stats. Some companies do either or and give PTO as well?

How do you track your expenses?

I'm the admin, cultivating the pipeline and handling accounting while Hubby is in the field getting the work done and estimates. We are the sole owners of our companies.

My biggest struggle is watching him pay cash or using a personal card for BUSINESS expenses! But I digress...

We use Quickbooks Online which is tied to our bank account - so expenses are automatically posted and categorized. Also, American Express is great with detailed end of year reports.
I tried quickbooks (which I use in the background of my apps) but found it wasn’t great for expense tracking on the go. Maybe it’s changed since I tried it last though as it was a number of years ago.

💰Bonuses

Great info thank you!
Also, if it helps, we have "four C's" as our values. Communication. Cleanliness. Character. Check [Everything]. If you want to cuss like a sailor, don't expect a full bonus. If you want to leave scraps around the job sites, don't expect a full bonus. You get the picture. Beyond the bonus, it provides a baseline for promotions, and in some cases terminations. There is a further breakdown where there are 100 traits graded 0-2, and each one gets allotted to a "C" and the annual review is based on their score out of 100. An apprentice wouldn't be able to grade on a project manager, so they aren't expected to have a grade for everything. But essentially, the score out of 100 shows progress from apprentice > technician > foreman > project manager.
